Description

1 March 2007, Berlin, Germany

International Conference ‘Advancing eGovernment’

The International Conference ‘Advancing eGovernment’ is organised by the German Federal Ministry of the Interior as part of Germany´s EU Council Presidency. It will focus on eGovernment strategies and solutions developed and implemented by Member States and the EU Commission (including its eGovernment Action plan) in order to take eGovernment services forward to reduce bureaucracy for all users groups. Ms Reding, member of the European Commission responsible for Information Society and Media, will present a keynote speech.

In order to facilitate the provision of eGovernment services across borders, European cooperation will have to be deepened with regard to key enablers. In the Federal Government’s view, such key enablers include eIdentity structures or open and standardized document exchange formats which could be used across Europe. Such developments are essential for major challenges such as implementing the Services Directive in all European Member States.

Accordingly, two workshops respectively dedicated to secure electronic identification throughout Europe (eID workshop) and to open standardized document exchange formats will take place on the day preceding the conference. The first one, which is a workshop of the ‘EU eID ad hoc expert group’, will focus on discussing and coordinating eID authentication models and levels. The second one will address the status of initiatives on the standardization of document formats, their consequences for European administration and the Member States as well as future standardisation developments.

Participation to both workshops will be possible only upon invitation, issued by the German Council Presidency in consultation with the European Commission. However priorities to be addressed during the main conference will include the results of the two workshops.

Expected participants to the conference are representatives from the business world as well as the academia and public administrations. Online registration is possible as from 8 January. Due to space constraints the number of participants is limited to 250. The Federal Ministry of the Interior reserves the right to select participants.
