Policy Context and Legal Framework

The City of Bordeaux is pushing the development of innovative uses of the Internet and mobile devices, through its "Digital City" initiative. Dealing with eEducation, eInclusion, eCitizenship and innovative practices, the whole agenda has a special interest for corner-of-the-street uses of the Internet in order to catch new audiences and involve them in day-to-day city life. From street or buildings, Facebook groups to participation online platforms, this side of the Digital City project is rapidly growing among the youngest part of the population.

Impact

The Flashvote has produced a change in the participation climate throughout the city during its campaign, and beyond.

After the initial launching event, the "flasvote" itself, a 45 days online campaign has allowed youngsters to vote through the city hall portal and through a Facebook application. Sharing this application allowed the most involved to share the participation spirit with their friends, and resulted in 1854 votes on the 17 action initiatives.

Lessons learnt

Because of the quick and efficient results gained, the City is now reflecting on amplification of the project to a broader audience.

Dear Antoine Bidegain,

Where can we find more information on the "quick and efficient results" mentioned in the case? Is the Facebook group at http://www.facebook.com/apps/application.php?id=313372971253 successful?

Best regards,

Christophe Strobbe
