European eGovernment Awards Winners 2009!

The five winners of the 4th European eGovernment Awards were announced in the award ceremony that took place at the 5th Ministerial eGovernment Conference on 19 November 2009.

• Category 1. eGovernment supporting the Single Market: EU-OPA, the European Order for Payment Application (Austria and Germany)
• Category 2a. eGovernment empowering citizens: Genvej (Denmark)
• Category 2b. eGovernment empowering businesses: MEPA, the Public Administration eMarketplace (Italy)
• Category 3. eGovernment enabling administrative efficiency and effectiveness: Licensing of Hunters via the “Multibanco” ATM Network (Portugal)
• Public prize: SMS Information System (Turkey)

ABOUT EUROPEAN eGOVERNMENT AWARDS

The European Commission call for good practice cases in the field of eGovernment closed on 12 June 2009. The call received a total of 259 submissions. The non-finalist cases that meet the minimum content and quality requirements of the portal will be published in November 2009.

The European eGovernment Awards is a European Commission initiative organised every two years. The aim is to identify and select good practices in the use of ICT in public services and highlight the benefits of ICT to society, including:

• Improved quality of life of citizens
• Increased public trust in government
• Increased competitiveness of European enterprises

The awards stimulate innovation and shared learning by identifying and promoting good practices. The focus of the European eGovernment Awards is in line with the strategic goals of the “i2010 - A European Information Society for Growth and Employment” initiative and other European Commission initiatives for the development of an information society for all. The awards also support the www.epractice.eu good practice exchange initiative.

Cases and experiences from all types of public sector organisations are welcome. Whether local, regional, national or cross-border, your case and experience will show how ICT can improve service delivery to citizens and businesses across Europe.

The finalists and winners of the European eGovernment Awards will be selected by a panel of eminent independent experts.
